Online Presence: An Introversion

For the month of October, short stories will be published at 6pm cst. Last week, I forgot to mention it here of all places, my b. Now, on to this week’s shortie of a blog post.

I still don’t quite get social media. I know that it’s important for my current trajectory to help grow an audience and connect with fellow humans, but I’m never really inclined to talk about my day or comment on others.  Every time I post something, it just hits me how boring my life really is. Boring in the fact that it’s pretty regular like everyone else’s.  Some part of me feels like it’s an extension of my introversion. I don’t like getting too personal with people I don’t know, yet on social media, particularly twitter, I’m meeting someone new almost every time I check-in, so in my mind, I’m always talking to someone I don’t know even though I have older followers. I don’t see there ever being a space to fully express myself except through my writing, which is also hidden in prose. “Is this a self-insert or a character trait, the world may never know.” Also, I grew up with people who put the most intimate details of their lives on their pages only to watch it backfire, and I can’t let that be me.  Still, it’s challenging to find a balance when it comes to interactions.

On the one hand, I like to be transparent. If I know I’m not going to be around, such as taking mental health days to cope with my depression, I’d like to let people know. On the other, I don’t want to tell everyone about the rude guy at the store, or the “interesting” idea that I came up with while driving home, my gripes with work, the funniest thing my best friend just said. Maybe I have to be comfortable with the boundaries I have, iron them out and work with them, instead of trying to force myself to be someone I’m not. I don’t even feel like I completely know who I am, let alone enough to post things I deem interesting about myself. Still, I do want people to get to know me but through my work, hopefully the important things make it through.

I think in my quest to build an audience, I haven’t figured out why I deserve one in the first place. Once I figure out the details and create that space, hopefully, I’ll attract people who don’t mind if I don’t post about what I got at the coffee shop that day.

Short Story Saturdays for the month of October will be published at 6pm cst, just another reminder. Happy writing.
