Just Desserts: A List

I’m quarantining and editing so not much is going on with me. I miss baking for my friends, so here’s a list of sweets and the fond memories I connect with them. Just a warning, not every dessert will be something I’ve personally made, as this post is mostly about recalling back to simpler times.

  1. Caramel Macchiato Cheesecake
    • Hand mixing cold cream cheese with my friend because we broke the hand mixer. Going over our schedule for the rest of the weekend, since her brother is coming to visit and we still have things to get so we can celebrate his birthday.
  2. Turtle Brownie
    • “Treat yourself,” we said. Making box brownies on the weekend to destress from college woes. Discussions on which piece of the brownie is best. We eat them as we marathon Supernatural.
  3. Banana Bread
    • Impromptu. Getting rid of old bananas and bringing over half the loaf just because my friend said she wanted to try it. Catching up with work only for the conversation to drift towards our dreams. Optimism for the future abound.
  4. Chess Pie
    • Meeting in the cafeteria for lunch, one of the best desserts that’s house-made. We only eat together a handful of times, but that’s college for you. Friends for a semester.
  5. Berry Danish
    • Childhood naivety. Friends forever before we knew what forever really meant. Eating them at my grandma’s house after playing outside with the neighbor kids. She sends them home once they’re done with a message for their aunt. Grown folks’ business.
  6. Cinnamon Rolls
    • Going downtown to see how high the river has risen from all the storms. We walk downtown and laugh at the only we find funny. My friend hasn’t been to the local bakery yet, so we go and split their extra-large cinnamon rolls, and we get a fresh one.
  7. Chocolate Chip Cookies
    • Splitting and measuring ingredients because one friend likes them crisp and the other likes them soft. Waking up early to drop off their Christmas cookies and chatting about Christmas plans. Warm hugs and cocoa.
  8. Cookies n Cream Ice Cream
    • Customary sleepovers. We’ll never outgrow these. Watching thrillers and providing our own commentary. Dressed in pajamas and covered in blankets, we eat from the container and remark at the lack of common sense from the protagonist.

Great. Now I’m craving Lemon Bars. What are some of your sweet memories?
